Hiking the Highest Peak in Massachusetts

Published by Tess Marte on

The highest point in Massachusetts is a fantastic adventure! Mount Greylock Summit is in the state’s northwest corner, near the border with New York and Vermont. It has a summit elevation of 3,491 feet (1,064 meters) and offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.

Mount Greylock, MA

Mount Greylock is part of the Appalachian Trail, which crosses the summit and passes by several interesting landmarks, such as the Bascom Lodge, the 93′ War Memorial Tower, and the Thunderbolt Ski Trail. The hike can range from two to about 10 miles (16 kilometers) round trip, depending on the trailhead chosen. The most popular trails are Ashuwillticook Rail Trail, Bellows South, Chesire Harbor Trail, Gould Trail, Glen Meadow Loop, and Thunderbolt Trail. It is moderately challenging but rewarding. The sounds of the leaves and waterfalls give this hike a very serene vibe.

The hike started at the Gould Trail parking lot by West Mountain Road. The trail begins on a paved section and is well-marked and easy to follow but steep and rocky in some areas. Hiking sticks are helpful on this trail. TrailBuddy came in handy as these are durable and flexible to adjust height. The trail also crossed several streams and wetlands, and in May, there was still snow on the ground and ice in several areas toward the top.

The prominent landmark, visible from the bottom of the mountain, is the War Memorial Tower, a 93-foot (28-meter) granite structure on Mount Greylock’s summit. It was built in 1932 as a tribute to the Massachusetts veterans who died in World War I. It also serves as a beacon for airplanes and a radio tower for emergency services. The tower has an observation deck that offers panoramic views of up to 90 miles (145 kilometers) on a clear day. In May 2023, the observation deck was closed. Otherwise, you could see the Berkshire Hills, the Green Mountains, the White Mountains, and even the Adirondacks. It is still breathtaking!

The Thunderbolt Ski Trail is a historic ski run that descends from the summit to the mountain base. It was created in 1934 by local ski enthusiasts. The ski trail hosted several national ski races in the 1930s and 1940s. It is still used today by adventurous skiers who want to experience a thrilling downhill ride. The trail is steep and narrow, with sharp turns and bumps.

The hike ended at the same parking lot where I started. I was tired but happy and proud of completing this challenging hike. It was one of the best hikes I’ve ever done, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves nature and adventure. Mount Greylock is truly a gem of Massachusetts!
